NATURE EDUCATION: - Outdoor 2 hour Hands-on Field Study at Stone Nature Center
• Birds and Their Homes (Grades K-3, Spring) Learn why
birds sing, how they build nests, raise their families and more.
• Bugs, Bugs, Bugs (Grades K-8, Spring-Fall) Explore the
world of invertebrates, including classification, adaptations and
the roles of these ‘creepy’ little animals.
• Flowers & Butterflies (Grades K-8 Spring-Sept) Participate
in ‘Monarch Watch’ and study the remarkable connection
between insects and plants in a discovery activity of catching
and tagging butterflies.
• The Forest Ecosystem (Grades 4-8, Spring-Fall) Learn
about the biology of trees, the elements of the forest ecosystem
and the importance of trees in the natural world. Investigate
woodland wildlife and food chains.
• Those Tricky Animals (Grades 3-12, All year) Focus on
the adaptation strategies and tricks used by animals to find
food and shelter, to fool predators or prey and to provide for
other daily needs. Learn how animals adapt to changes to
insure their own survival.
• Indians of the Kansas Prairie (Grades 4-12, All year) This
lively, hands-on program examines the role of humans in the
natural world. Students recreate the lives of early Kansans.
• Predators & Their Prey (Grades 3-12, All year) Investigate
the dynamics of the predator-prey relationship. Examine
the race for survival between hunter and hunted.
• Spiders: Hunters in the Grass (Grades 2-8 Summer-Fall)
Study the amazing world of these misunderstood little predators.
Learn about their role in keeping nature’s balance.
• Seasons and Cycles (Grades 2-5, Spring-Fall) Discover
how all living things are governed by daily, seasonal and life
cycles. Learn how nature prepares for the cold of winter and
the arrival of spring babies.
• Tallgrass Prairie (Grades 4-12, Late spring-Winter) Discover
the beauty and wonder of the Kansas Prairie, its wildlife
and its importance as an endangered ecosystem.
• The Web of Life (Grades 3-12 All year) Explore the
complexities of nature’s food chains and how they interconnect
to form the great web of life.
• Wet and Wild Life (Grades 3-12, May-Oct) Investigate
the complexities of the pond ecosystem, its food webs and the
critical need to protect Kansas waters.
• Where the Wild Things Live (Grades K-12, All year)
Hunt for the homes of animals and study how wildlife has
adapted to building shelters in different habitats.
